The Seven Hermetic Principles: The Operating System of Reality
Hermes Trismegistus is said to have left behind seven laws that govern every level of reality. Master them and you stop being moved by life — you begin to move it.
Where the Principles Come From
The Seven Hermetic Principles were published in 1908 in The Kybalion, an anonymous distillation of ancient Hermetic teaching attributed to Hermes Trismegistus — the legendary syncretic figure combining the Greek Hermes and the Egyptian Thoth.
The principles are not articles of faith. They are presented as observable laws — testable in your own life, in your own week.
1. The Principle of Mentalism
'THE ALL is MIND; the Universe is Mental.' Reality is, at root, mental in nature. The physical world is the surface manifestation of an underlying field of consciousness. Change the inner field, and the outer eventually follows.
2. The Principle of Correspondence
'As above, so below; as below, so above.' Patterns repeat across scales. What is true in the atom is true in the solar system. What is true in your inner life is true in your outer circumstances. Read one well and you can read the other.
3. The Principle of Vibration
'Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.' Matter, mind, and spirit differ in their rate of vibration, not in essence. Raise your vibration and your experience reorganizes around the new frequency.
4. The Principle of Polarity
'Everything is dual; everything has its pair of opposites.' Hot and cold are the same thing at different points on the same scale. Hate and love are the same energy at different positions on the same axis. Mastery means consciously moving along the scale rather than being pinned to one end.
5. The Principle of Rhythm
'Everything flows, out and in.' Every advance is followed by retreat; every gain has a corresponding loss. Hermetists do not try to stop the pendulum — they learn the Law of Neutralization and refuse to ride it downward emotionally.
6. The Principle of Cause and Effect
'Every cause has its effect; every effect has its cause.' Chance is law not yet recognized. Take responsibility for the chain you sit inside, and you become a cause rather than an effect.
7. The Principle of Gender
'Gender is in everything.' The masculine (electric, projecting) and feminine (magnetic, receiving) principles operate on every plane — physical, mental, spiritual. Balance both within and creation flows through you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Hermetic Principles religious?
No. They are pre-religious. They predate Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism and are presented as observational laws applicable to anyone of any tradition.
What is the most important Hermetic Principle?
Mentalism is foundational — the rest unfold from it. But Polarity is often the most practically transformative, because it gives you immediate leverage over emotional states.
